Facts About Fats
Dietary fats are available primarily from two basic sources:
- Animal based fats
- Plant based fats
And there are primarily three different types of dietary fat:
- Saturated Fats: These tend to be solid at room temperature, and come primarily from animal sources. Examples include butter, lard, tallow, chicken fat. The exception to this is coconut and palm oil. They are highly saturated but come from plant sources.
- Polyunsaturated Fats: These are usually vegetable oils such as corn or sesame oil, and tend to be liquid at room temperature.
- Monounsaturated Fats: These also tend to be liquid at room temperature. Example include olive oil and canola oil.
